Module 12 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I selected each of these videos because they strike my interest based off of title. Out of the list provided, I found myself wanting to know more about these two clips.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
I thought it was interesting the way the imprints works and how it is used amongst famous actresses. The process of printmaking is specific and creates images that are identical to the original. The sculpture of spaces is full of the artists background and why he develops his art in a way that is shown. The most popular design destinations were the most expensive and made it harder to get permission for plans such and the Bayfront park project.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Andy Warhol is described on page 508 of the textbook. He is photographed and described as a "machine" with two sides to his personality.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I enjoyed both films I really enjoyed the Andy Warhol video more than the sculpture of spaces. I recognized his work and found it different the way he replaced painting with photography. Additionally, his obsession with celebrities was unique. Isamu Noguchi's video doesn't seem to match the textbook readings

Video Review Module 11

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose these two videos because they drew my attention. Ive always had an interest for Picasso but I wasn't familiar with Matisse. Expressionism sounded creative and I was curious to know what the film consisted of.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
I learned that Matisse and Picasso were long time friends and rivals. Matisse needed to be entertained. When he traveled, he complained of how bored he was through letters. Picasso was the opposite and always lived inside himself. He didn't travel or feel the need for outside stimulants. He hung out in his studio with tobacco and that was enough. Picasso doesn't use pallets or easels. He used newspaper on the floor. While Matisse had a grand home with wrap around balconies and large windows that overlooked the water. His paintings always meant a struggle of fear. Matisse and Picasso share an interest of painting women. Expressionism is much more free-flowing and talks about the changing compositions of color within art. The change in art elements can change the message of the painting or art piece based off of the colors emotional properties. Expressionism is linked to emotion within art; beneath the surface.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Henri Matisse is described on page 485 of the textbook. His art is described as being wild however, Matisse is described as cautious, reserved, cheerful, hardworking, dedicated to family, frugal, and painstaking.
Picasso is described on page 488 of the textbook. He is described as being individualized through his immense volume of work and diverse rage of styles and media. Only a few can match him in richness and variety of personal history.
Expressionism is described on page 483. The example of expressionism given was The Joy of Life by Henri Matisse. Th color of this piece has a supporting role in describing objects to become a fully independent expressive element. It is a paradise to be.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The films were both informational and interesting. I wasn't familiar with expressionism or Matisse prior to watching the films. Now I am informed and educated enough to give a detailed description of the two through information of the film and the biography of each within the textbook.

Art Gallery Visit 2 Burchfield Penney

1.    What is the title of the exhibit?

Contemporary Project Space.

2.    What is the theme of the exhibition?

            Chemical Light.

3.     The exhibit holds a low light. The room is almost dark; however, it allows enough light to illuminate the artist’s work displayed on the high walls.
4.     The walls hold a blank canvas and assist in drawing focus into the exhibit’s art. Each piece is lit up and displayed in a way that catches the viewers’ attention. In detail, there is a dim light that shines across each hand made collage. Victor Shanchuk does a wonderful job of catching the attention of the viewer.
5.     The materials are mainly light based. There are projectors that screen Victors’ other work and there are many collages that are displayed in groups. The exhibit was built for viewers to spend some time in. There are benches for people to sit and the low light brings great focus into the detail of the work. It was designed creatively.
6.     The movement of the viewer should be slow and steady. The art is meant to capture the attention of the viewer in a way that is captivating.
7.     The artworks are organized by collages and projections.
8.     The pieces are similar in color and design. All of the work is made with bright colors that are eye-catching and hold visual texture.
9.     The artworks come off similar, however, within the projections are hidden images within the slides. You have to look closely to recognize the images. In contrast, the solid collages do not hold the same feature but are fascinating to study.
10.  The collages are framed in an all-black mount that have plastic covering. The film is just a projection up on the wall so there is no frame to be displayed in this section.
11.  The artworks are identified as handmade and untitled. The artist wanted it this way because he wants the viewer to title and identify the work as we see it. He describes them as rediscoveries of the overlooked and the reorganized. He doesn’t want to limit the viewers creativity by labeling each piece of work.

12.  The artist describes the images as dynamism, power, movement, energy and speed. The images are sensual, each changing into one another, a transition into infinite space, unknown space, a window, an icon; a serious place, filled with force fields, the spiritual energy in art. This is the artists way of explaining how the different pieces of work feeds off one-another.

1.  Be receptive - Keep an open mind.  Look for what is good.  No put-downs allowed.

The artwork is creative and holds an extreme amount of detail within each slide.

2.  Description –Describe what you see.  (subject matter)?

The art is colorful and eye-popping. The images are full of different graphics that challenge the mind to explore.

3.  Formal analysis – (form) What principles and elements were used and how are they used?
  • Shapes-visual depth within the work
  • Free flowing form- there are no specific shapes involved
  • Value of light shining- the spotlight illuminates the work and holds power with the light value
  • The intensity of color- brings attention to the piece
  • Visual Texture- the art is realistic and gives an idea of how the art might feel if it wasn’t in the frame.

4.  Bracketing - Is there anything in or about this work that reminds you of anything else? Do you see any symbols, metaphors, or allegories?  (iconography)

This work actually reminded me of salt water fish. When I looked at the slides, especially, the different colors and movement within the work reminded me of a moving school of fish. The visual texture corresponded with the scales that you’d find on a fish along with the bright colors. Salt water fish are more prone to be bright colored so I find it easy to relate the images to salt water fish.

4.  Interpretation - (content)  What do you think the artist was trying to say?

The artist is trying to expand the minds of the viewers by making this their personal exhibit. He wants the work to be personalized and justified to their opinion. For example, this art reminded me of a school of fish; it could symbolize a different meaning to someone else.

CARIBBEAN MASK:

This mask represents texture throughout the top of the head to reveal a course hair-like feature. The color value can be interpreted as a middle gray with value of color added to the piece.

SOUTH AMERICAN MASK:

This mask has a great amount of texture shown at the bottom of the piece. The mask seems to be very symmetrical and has a limited spectrum of color added.

These are my sketches for my inspiration of my final mask.

My final mask is made from recycled material. I used my Chipotle box to use as the head and the bag to give texture and life to the mask. A simple face was all I though it needed. This mask correlated with my sketches and I think it turned out well. Creating the mask was fun and enjoyable.

Module 10 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose my two videos because they both sparked my interest amongst my other choices. I learned very little information about both in high school but I find it hard to recall. The videos defiantly freshened my memory and gave provided much more depth than I was given before.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Buddha was on a mission to share his enlightenment and wanted followers to know that all compounds work out. Buddhism follows ways of putting aside ego's and pleasure. The architecture of the hindu temples are said to seduce and follow the path to enlightenment. I thought it was interesting how Buddhism flourishes in every asian country except on, India, the land of it's birth. Hinduism is similar to the idea of architecture. The temples themselves are monuments and is dedicated to certain God's. Some are dedicated to death. They believe that death is a transition point on the great path of life. They believe we will all arrive at the same point by being released into the Ganges river. This process is symbolic to the believer.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
On page 440 of the textbook, it explains buddhist shrines and temples that reflect the hierarchy of paradise. On page 432, it explains Hinduism and its art. This segment emphasizes the ritual sacrifice that cycles in the Hinduism culture.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The films included many forms of outside information. The depth this information is not included in the textbook. By showing shrines, temples, or other places of worship in detail, I feel a better understanding for the culture. In addition, the video speaker would constantly add new information for the audience and almost act as an attention grabber. I found this method to be helpful and made the videos more interesting to watch.

Art Making/Material Exploration: Exploring Line

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

I thought using my hand was a little difficult because I have many little crevices and lines that makeup my hands,. The detail is hard to copy. I work a physical job that ruins many points of my hands. They are often dry and imperfect.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?

I choose a pencil because it was readily available and I think something lighter as a pencil could benefit the first sketch. Charcoal might throw off the first sketch or make it more bolder and intimidating to start with.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?

I felt very uncomfortable and id rather not draw with my non-dominant hand.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?

I think they are successful studies because I could tell a huge difference in my drawing technique when I switched my hands. It was as if no matter what I tried, nothing could help my non-dominant hand to draw like my dominant right hand.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?

I would not consider using my non-dominant hand in the future because it makes a detailed picture look messy and unprofessional. I would rather stick with my right hand to create art.

Module 9 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I selected the two of my videos because both contained an interesting title that caught my attention. I suspected it would be favorable to my interest over the other choices.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Caravaggio is an artist that is physically aggressive against opponents. His paintings are meant to be felt and believed in. His paintings are meant to be taken seriously by producing work that is disturbing to the eye. It creates a presence of sacred drama. His faith was the driving pointing his paintings. He believed Christ was in the flesh of men. Leonardo on the other hand is said to be unstable while growing up. However, his sensitivity develops as he gets older and he began to understand the "emotions of the soul". He was said to be a genius that made up a spiritual and material aspect of nature.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Leonardos relation to the text is relatable to the video. He did not marry and formed very few close relationships. He is isolated and believed in amusing himself. He loved animals and despised any cruelty that came to them. His interests were represented in all of his paintings and shown throughout the book and video clip. Caravaggio is compared to Peter Paul Rubens within the book. He creates similar work to Caravaggio. Not quite as disturbing. Caravaggio's paintings seem almost frozen in a moment of anguish. In comparison, Rubens figures burst outside the picture in several directions.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I thought the videos were very informative and give a great amount of depth when being compared to the reading concepts. The reading gives background information but not quite as much detail as the videos offer. The artists are defined in a way that gives an understanding of who they are and why they paint what they do. It answers what their motives are and how they operate as artists.
