Week 15 Project #5

Guernica - Picasso
1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail.
This piece is a work of conceptual art. The meaning of the painting is far more important than how it looks when completed. The content is meaningful and powerful. This painting relates to war and its resulting factors. The design is laid out a certain way for viewers to find the hidden figures. The painting has a combination of detail and elements. There is a form of organic art pictured here as well as realism due to war.

2. What processes were used to create this work? What social influences might the artist be responding to and why?
World War II would begin just a couple years later and would further decimate the European continent as a whole. In Guernica, we see several victims of the bombing; some still living, some already dead. (Guernica Meaning, n.d.)
The artist is responding to the act of war. He targets the warmongers and fascists. It exists to make them feel ashamed. (Picasso, Guernica n.d.)

3. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship.
This painting is an anti-war icon that reveals crimes against humanity. In 1936, a civil war broke out. It was history’s first aerial saturation bombing of a civilian population. It was a cold-blooded training mission designed to test a new bombing tactic to intimidate and terrorize the resistance. (Picasso, Guernica n.d.) When looking closely at the painting, figured begin to emerge and faces appear. The faces show fear and cries. For example, to the very left corner lies a woman holding a small boy and crying to the sky. The boy is dying in her arms and she is devastated.
4. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why.
Color is shown within this painting. It was finished in black and white. This encourages the sorrow of war and the circumstances they were facing. It was a time of reckless behavior and chaos.
Value of grey is shown within the painting. The black is used to highlight the figures shown and emphasize the reality of war.
Lines are used to give a two-dimensional image within the painting
Contrast of the grey tones emphasizes the emphasis expressed on the figures faces and bodies.
5. Evaluate what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the work.  Apply discipline specific vocabulary and concepts when describing your point of view.
Picassos painting is not immediately clear and can be considered an abstract. The images convert into figures once it's analyzed long enough.

Self portrait/Art gallery

 1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?

I selected these pieces because they were all beautiful to me. I looked at the images and saw beautiful women pictured and it gave me the inspiration to use them in my final project.

2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?

I used charcoal pencil on my sketch pad because it was easier to detail the drawing than painting would be.

3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?

I had a hard time re-creating the details of my face. I have always struggled with self-portraits. It never copies the same and never looks like the same person (haha). I did my best to

4. How does this piece represent you?

The picture was taken when I didn't have any makeup on. I have dark circles under my eyes. It's the definition of finals week. I am exhausted from work and school yet I am getting through each day. I am working harder than I ever have. I am proud of this self-portrait.

5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?

Balance: The portrait needs to be somewhat symmetrical due to being a drawing of a face.

Line: Crosshatching is seen slightly within this drawing.

Shape: The outline of the face. Height and width are difficult to be measured in this form.

Proportion: Eyes need to face the same direction, mouth and nose should be centered, outline of face should be well proportioned.

6. Did you enjoy working on this project?

This project was enjoyable. It's nice to be hands on sometimes. it brings out creativity and relaxes the mind.

7. What do you think of your final artwork?

My final artwork was a trial and error. Many mistakes made, erase marks, and frustration. However, I thought it was an innovative and fun idea to wrap up the semester.

Week 13 & 14 Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the lowdown video, I find it interesting that these artists find themselves making a new category of art called a lowbrow. Instead of the highbrow artists; including prestige work, they are an all-inclusive group that allows many forms of art that might be looked down on. Art could include nudity, comic characters, gay lifestyles or anything that deviated from the norm.
The BBC culture show talks a lot about abstract within paintings. It talks about how structure is hidden within the works of art that are displayed together within the clip. Insights of how artists see the world is the highlight of this video. They try to show the audience that there is more to an abstract painting than just the initial viewing. When you look closely, its rather clever and sensitive way of creating art and connections.
The acquiring mind video focuses on the director of the Metropolitan Museum of art, Philippe de Montebello, buys and chooses works of art that come through to the museum. Most of the work is European and authentic. They are constantly working to find works of art to fit their museums collections. The art is at competition. The pieces compete for the attention of the director and the departmental chairman in shows.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
The lowdown video doesn't not necessarily relate to my art exhibition because it doesn't contain any forms of art that are categorized to being lowbrow. They are all fairly normal forms of art and don't hold much diversity.
I don't believe the BBC video relates to my exhibit too much. Not many of my included works of art are considered abstract. They hold a clear image that dense't hold the same hidden messages as the works of art explained in the clip.
I would say the Philippe de Montebello video can relate to some of the pieces that were included in my collection. Philippe holds works of art from European artists. Most of my work holds a similar style of work as the collections shown in the Metropolitan Art Museum. The French style of art is very popular within the museum.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
I enjoyed each of the films. I found them to be informational and worth watching. In reference to my curation project, I found all three videos helpful in finding a direction to go in. All of the videos shown hold different perspectives and styles of artwork. I think it was beneficial to see the different references before choosing a final exhibition.

Project 4 Art Curator Exhibition Slideshow Journal

For this project, I found it difficult to look for images that correlated with my desired exhibit. However, the images that I came across fit the slideshow well and created a great layout for the presentation. I found it easy to write the art critisism because most of my images had differences and small details that made them unique from each other. I enjoyed reading about the images and how they were created. This project was time consuming but turned out being extremely informational with some unknown artists.

Module 12 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I selected each of these videos because they strike my interest based off of title. Out of the list provided, I found myself wanting to know more about these two clips.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
I thought it was interesting the way the imprints works and how it is used amongst famous actresses. The process of printmaking is specific and creates images that are identical to the original. The sculpture of spaces is full of the artists background and why he develops his art in a way that is shown. The most popular design destinations were the most expensive and made it harder to get permission for plans such and the Bayfront park project.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Andy Warhol is described on page 508 of the textbook. He is photographed and described as a "machine" with two sides to his personality.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I enjoyed both films I really enjoyed the Andy Warhol video more than the sculpture of spaces. I recognized his work and found it different the way he replaced painting with photography. Additionally, his obsession with celebrities was unique. Isamu Noguchi's video doesn't seem to match the textbook readings

Video Review Module 11

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose these two videos because they drew my attention. Ive always had an interest for Picasso but I wasn't familiar with Matisse. Expressionism sounded creative and I was curious to know what the film consisted of.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
I learned that Matisse and Picasso were long time friends and rivals. Matisse needed to be entertained. When he traveled, he complained of how bored he was through letters. Picasso was the opposite and always lived inside himself. He didn't travel or feel the need for outside stimulants. He hung out in his studio with tobacco and that was enough. Picasso doesn't use pallets or easels. He used newspaper on the floor. While Matisse had a grand home with wrap around balconies and large windows that overlooked the water. His paintings always meant a struggle of fear. Matisse and Picasso share an interest of painting women. Expressionism is much more free-flowing and talks about the changing compositions of color within art. The change in art elements can change the message of the painting or art piece based off of the colors emotional properties. Expressionism is linked to emotion within art; beneath the surface.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Henri Matisse is described on page 485 of the textbook. His art is described as being wild however, Matisse is described as cautious, reserved, cheerful, hardworking, dedicated to family, frugal, and painstaking.
Picasso is described on page 488 of the textbook. He is described as being individualized through his immense volume of work and diverse rage of styles and media. Only a few can match him in richness and variety of personal history.
Expressionism is described on page 483. The example of expressionism given was The Joy of Life by Henri Matisse. Th color of this piece has a supporting role in describing objects to become a fully independent expressive element. It is a paradise to be.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The films were both informational and interesting. I wasn't familiar with expressionism or Matisse prior to watching the films. Now I am informed and educated enough to give a detailed description of the two through information of the film and the biography of each within the textbook.

Art Gallery Visit 2 Burchfield Penney

1.    What is the title of the exhibit?

Contemporary Project Space.

2.    What is the theme of the exhibition?

            Chemical Light.

3.     The exhibit holds a low light. The room is almost dark; however, it allows enough light to illuminate the artist’s work displayed on the high walls.
4.     The walls hold a blank canvas and assist in drawing focus into the exhibit’s art. Each piece is lit up and displayed in a way that catches the viewers’ attention. In detail, there is a dim light that shines across each hand made collage. Victor Shanchuk does a wonderful job of catching the attention of the viewer.
5.     The materials are mainly light based. There are projectors that screen Victors’ other work and there are many collages that are displayed in groups. The exhibit was built for viewers to spend some time in. There are benches for people to sit and the low light brings great focus into the detail of the work. It was designed creatively.
6.     The movement of the viewer should be slow and steady. The art is meant to capture the attention of the viewer in a way that is captivating.
7.     The artworks are organized by collages and projections.
8.     The pieces are similar in color and design. All of the work is made with bright colors that are eye-catching and hold visual texture.
9.     The artworks come off similar, however, within the projections are hidden images within the slides. You have to look closely to recognize the images. In contrast, the solid collages do not hold the same feature but are fascinating to study.
10.  The collages are framed in an all-black mount that have plastic covering. The film is just a projection up on the wall so there is no frame to be displayed in this section.
11.  The artworks are identified as handmade and untitled. The artist wanted it this way because he wants the viewer to title and identify the work as we see it. He describes them as rediscoveries of the overlooked and the reorganized. He doesn’t want to limit the viewers creativity by labeling each piece of work.

12.  The artist describes the images as dynamism, power, movement, energy and speed. The images are sensual, each changing into one another, a transition into infinite space, unknown space, a window, an icon; a serious place, filled with force fields, the spiritual energy in art. This is the artists way of explaining how the different pieces of work feeds off one-another.

1.  Be receptive - Keep an open mind.  Look for what is good.  No put-downs allowed.

The artwork is creative and holds an extreme amount of detail within each slide.

2.  Description –Describe what you see.  (subject matter)?

The art is colorful and eye-popping. The images are full of different graphics that challenge the mind to explore.

3.  Formal analysis – (form) What principles and elements were used and how are they used?
  • Shapes-visual depth within the work
  • Free flowing form- there are no specific shapes involved
  • Value of light shining- the spotlight illuminates the work and holds power with the light value
  • The intensity of color- brings attention to the piece
  • Visual Texture- the art is realistic and gives an idea of how the art might feel if it wasn’t in the frame.

4.  Bracketing - Is there anything in or about this work that reminds you of anything else? Do you see any symbols, metaphors, or allegories?  (iconography)

This work actually reminded me of salt water fish. When I looked at the slides, especially, the different colors and movement within the work reminded me of a moving school of fish. The visual texture corresponded with the scales that you’d find on a fish along with the bright colors. Salt water fish are more prone to be bright colored so I find it easy to relate the images to salt water fish.

4.  Interpretation - (content)  What do you think the artist was trying to say?

The artist is trying to expand the minds of the viewers by making this their personal exhibit. He wants the work to be personalized and justified to their opinion. For example, this art reminded me of a school of fish; it could symbolize a different meaning to someone else.
